Travis “Toot” Williams, MD, was born and raised in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro/Durham region of North Carolina. After a short basketball stint, he graduated Summa cum laude from NC State University with a degree in Human Biology and a minor in Philosophy. He completed medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine with the Kenan Primary Care Rural Scholars Program, in which the majority of his training was spent with MAHEC and small communities of Western North Carolina. He was mentored by prominent healthcare leaders in the region, including: Eric Byrd, MD (Hendersonville), Charlie Baker, MD (Linville), Robert Bashford, MD (Chapel Hill), Benjamin Gilmer, MD (MAHEC), Bryan Hodge, MD (MAHEC), Carriedelle Fusco, FNP (MAHEC), Hayam Shaker, MD (MAHEC) and William Kelley, PA (Cherokee).
He subsequently finished his residency training in Grand Junction, CO at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, in which he completed an Area of Concentration in Rural Healthcare with emphasis in Addiction Medicine and Integrative Medicine with mentoring by Ryan Jackman, MD of the AIM Clinic. During his training, he was twice-nominated for Resident of the Year through the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians. In addition, he received numerous awards for resident teaching and patient care.
His medical interests include: substance use disorders, internal medicine/evidence-based medicine, office procedures, hepatitis C management/community medicine, integrative modalities, treadmill/nuclear stress testing, sports medicine, and behavioral health integration. As a graduate of the well-known Medical Acupuncture course through the Helm’s Medical Institute, he incorporates community acupuncture, cupping, and more into practice for acute injuries, chronic conditions, and substance use disorders.
He is board-certified in Family Medicine with completion of fellowship training through the MAHEC Rural Fellowship in 2024. He will be eligible for board-certification in Addiction Medicine in 2025. Dr. Williams has assisted in establishing Clay Comprehensive Addictions Program (CCAP) in Clay County, which provides integrative care for those struggling with substance use disorders. He also works with various community initiatives at the following: part-time physician at Hazelwood Healthcare (opioid treatment program in Franklin), Board Member for Rock Bottom Recovery, Team Physician for Hayesville High School sports teams, Medical Director for Cardiopulmonary Services at Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital, Medical Director for Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation at Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital, Medical Director for Wound Care at Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital, Medical Director for Hospice of North Carolina, and Medical Director of Clay County EMS. In addition, Dr. Williams precepts through MAHEC and UNC-CH as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Family Medicine for current medical students interested in rural healthcare.
He and his family live on a farm in Clay County. He enjoys working outdoors, reading, hunting/riding/fishing, hiking, cooking, collecting vinyl records, and being disappointed on a yearly basis by Gonzaga basketball.
